Steps To Follow To Get Your SR22 Insurance

Once you are convicted of operating a vehicle without insurance, a DUI, or other offenses that lead to license suspension, you will not be allowed to drive. The only way you can reinstate your driving privileges is by getting an SR22 car insurance policy. While the laws may vary depending on the state, you can be sure the instructions for acquiring the certification will be similar once you're convicted.

Why Do Drivers Need the SR22 Certificate?

This is a financial responsibility bond designed for high-risk drivers. If you're instructed to get it, the state needs to verify if you have the minimum auto insurance. This isn't a separate insurance plan but a certificate the company files with the DMV on your behalf. Since this bond is designed for negligent vehicle operators, you can be sure it'll cost more than regular auto insurance plans, which you still need to pay for.

How Can One Get This Certificate?

Here are the basic steps you should consider to get the SR22 insurance certificate as instructed by the state's department of motor vehicles.

Inform the Insurer

Since the insurance company is responsible for filing an SR22 certificate, you'll need to contact them to discuss your predicament so they can begin the process. This step will confirm that you already have the regular vehicle insurance plan for the period you'll be holding the bond. If you don't have a basic policy or the coverage doesn't meet the state minimums, the provider will ask you to buy a sufficient amount of the policy before filing the bond.

Decide the Kind of SR22 Bond You Need

Drivers can consider three primary forms of SR22 certificates depending on their requirements. The owner's certificate is for covering the vehicles you own. An operator's certificate is for drivers that need the certificate to operate a vehicle even though they don't own it. This plan protects the insurance holders when they drive any vehicle, no matter the ownership status. It also comes in handy if you frequently borrow vehicles or use autos for hire.

Filing the Certificate

Once you purchase the primary insurance plan and choose the type of certificate you prefer, the provider will file the bond with the DMV. You will have to pay a certain fee for the service. You'll be instructed to maintain the insurance coverage throughout the period you have the financial responsibility certificate on file. If the insurance plan gets canceled or lapses within this period, the insurance provider will notify the relevant authorities, and your driving privileges may be revoked.
