3 Important Things You Should Know About Home Insurance Coverage Of A Break-In

You feel violated, you have things missing, and your home may have even sustained some damage. It sounds like you have fallen victim to a burglar and you've just experienced a home break-in. This situation can make you feel vulnerable, violated, and angry, but thankfully, your home insurance will probably be a huge saving grace. The fact is, most forms of homeowner's insurance do have some kind of coverage that will help you recoup what you lost and pay for the damages. However, even though this is the case, there are a few things that you need to know before moving forward.

File the police report immediately when you discover what has occurred.

The very first thing you need to do when you discover your home has been broken into is to call the authorities. Your first inclination may be to call on your insurance provider to file a claim, but the incident does need to be properly reported before you can actually file the claim. In fact, most homeowner's insurance companies will request a copy of the police report as proof of the event that took place and to gather information about what occurred.

Make a detailed list of everything you believe to be missing before calling to file your claim.

The police will ask you for a list of what's missing or what's been taken when they respond to your call, but they may give you some time to come up with this list. This is a good thing because, with rattled nerves, it can be difficult to think clearly enough to really figure out what is still in your house and what is gone. Before you call and file a claim with your home insurance provider, make sure you have taken the time to create this list.

Keep the insurance company up to date about new developments.

Once you have filed the initial police report and then your insurance claim, it does not mean the whole ordeal is done. These insurance claims can be ongoing for a few reasons. For one, it is not uncommon for stolen property to be recovered by the authorities after a break-in has occurred. Of course, this property will be returned to you, so you should not be reimbursed for something you get back. Secondly, you may discover other missing items well after the incident. Keep in touch with your insurance agent for the weeks and months following your claim and report any new information. Contact a company, like Angel Auto Insurance, for more help.
